Trade Replay, Tick by Tick: Review Trades on Your Broker’s Own Prices
26 September 2026 · By The Pips Project team · 6 min read
Reviewing a trade from a screenshot tells you where price ended up. It doesn't tell you what you saw at the moment you clicked buy, how long the trade sat against you, or whether your stop was ever really in danger. That is what trade replay is for: playing the market back exactly as it moved while your position was open, so you can judge the decision instead of the outcome.
Why most chart replays aren't your trade
Most replay tools rebuild the past from a generic data feed. That sounds fine until you trade forex, gold or indices, where every broker quotes its own prices, runs its own server clock and builds its own candles. A generic feed can show a wick that never touched your stop, or miss the spike that filled it. If the chart doesn't match the platform you traded on, the review is built on the wrong market.
What an accurate replay needs
Your broker's own prices
The data should come from the terminal you traded on, not a third-party feed. Then the candles, the spread and the timing are the ones that actually decided your fills.
Ticks, not only candles
A one-minute candle hides everything that happened inside that minute. Bid and ask ticks show the real path of price, including the spread widening at the news release that took out your stop.
No look-ahead
While the replay is playing, the chart must only show what existed at that moment. The candle that is still forming should grow tick by tick, exactly as it did live. Anything else leaks the future into your review.
Your stop and target, as they moved
If you trailed your stop or moved your target mid-trade, the replay should show those levels changing at the time you changed them. That is often where the lesson is.
How trade replay works in The Pips Project
When a trade closes, the sync app on your computer reads your broker's one-minute candles and bid/ask ticks around it straight from MetaTrader, compresses them and uploads them privately to your journal. Open the trade in the Journal, press Replay, and it plays back on a TradingView Lightweight Chart:
- Candles form tick by tick, on your broker's server clock.
- Your entry and exit fills are marked where they happened.
- Stop and target lines move when you moved them.
- Switch between M1, M5, M15 and H1, and play from real time up to 30 minutes a second.
Before we shipped it, we checked it against real trades: every fill landed inside the broker's own bid/ask at that moment, and the five-minute, fifteen-minute and hourly candles we build matched MetaTrader's own candles exactly.
How to review a trade with replay
- Watch the minutes before your entry. Pause just before your fill and ask: would I take this again, seeing only this?
- Watch how it was managed. Did you move the stop to breakeven too early? Did you cut the trade while it was still inside your plan?
- Check the exit against the plan. Target, stop, or a nervous early close? Tag it, so the pattern shows up in Insights over time.
